Telegraph.CO.UK:
In a magazine interview Obama and his wife Michelle revealed that one of their steadfast house rules is not giving Christmas or birthday presents to Malia, 10, and Sasha, seven.
Santa Claus is still permitted to deliver "seasonal gifts" however.

Wow~ no birthday presents? no christmas presents? That's sad! and all to prove what? I have a feeling that decision may come back to bite them in their butts!
I commend Obama for fighting the culture of consumerism and materialism that has pervaded our culture. Corporations get us while we're young, making us believe that buy their stuff will make us more happy and satisfied with our lives. Not many people are as daring as Obama, though, to take a stand against the so-called "Christmas" which has degenerated from a "holy-day" to a spend tons of money and stuff your face with food day.
We are Christians and have discussed scaling back the gifts for Christmas. I am against gifts and candy at Easter, it is a solemn Holy Week and I believe is disrespected by the commercialism. Before our son's birthday, he sorts out toys, books and clothes that are out of date, don't fit or he'd like to donate and they go to the local Childrens shelter. And 1/4 of all gift money received gets donated to a cause that he helps pick (and 1/4 in the bank). We limit his b'day gift to one special item from us, and he receives gifts from friends and family. We do buy him books liberally and will buy toys and sports gear occasionally throughout the year. I salute parents who attempt to keep in perspective the purpose of the seasons. I have nothing against gift giving either, it's a personal choice based on personal values. Ah, but I did like my earrings from the hubby last Christmas!! Peace and God's blessings to all, may we remember the true purpose of Christmas.
