A look at Obama's responses to questions posed at the political forum held at Saddlebrook Church in California on August 16, 2008
The BBC reports:
"Speaking first, Mr Obama defended his support for abortion and same-sex civil unions, but said marriage should only be between a man and a woman. In regards to personal moral failures, Obama also sited past drug and alcohol use along with selfishness. McCain sited a failed previous marriage.
At the beginning of the first hour-long interview, Mr Obama told the pastor that America's greatest moral failure was its insufficient help to the disadvantaged.
The Democratic candidate noted that the Bible had quoted Jesus as saying: "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me."
He said the maxim should apply to victims of poverty, sexism and racism.
Mr Obama also reaffirmed his belief that marriage should only be a "union between a man and a woman", although he also defended his support for same-sex civil unions and for the granting of similar rights to same-sex partners.
If he were president, he said he would not support a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage because the issue was one for state governments to decide.
On abortion, Mr Obama stressed he remained pro-choice and that he believed in the "Roe vs Wade" Supreme Court ruling supporting it. "
When asked, "At what point does a baby get human rights?"
[Obama's response:] I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade." He added that he supports the landmark decision Roe vs. Wade but said the issue has "moral and ethical content" and stressed his commitment to reducing the number of abortions."When asked if evil exists and if so how it should be handled, McCain said Yes and "defeat it." McCain then offered such examples as radical Islam and Osama bin Laden.
[The L.A. Times:]"Obama offered a long answer to whether evil exists, stating that while "we see evil all the time," individuals will not be able to "erase evil from the world. That is God's task."When asked to name the three people that would most influence their decisions:
[The L.A. Times:]"McCain named Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq; John Lewis, the Democratic congressman and civil rights leader; and his economic advisor, Meg Whitman, the ex-CEO of eBay. That allowed him to remind the audience of three campaign themes: his foreign policy credentials, serving a cause greater than one's self-interest and his pledge to use the advice of people like Whitman to turn the economy around."Obama named his wife Michelle Obama, his grandmother and politicians such as Ted Kennedy.

"It's above my pay grade."
Unbelievable. This man is asking us to allow him to be president, yet, when asked a simple question dealing with his opinion, he responds "It is above my pay grade."
What will he do when he has to make a decision about the next attack against America? "It's above my pay grade" so I will do nothing.
Give me a break! This one answer should eliminate him as a serious contender for the White House.
Additionally, later in the discussion, he clearly states his position. He believes life doesn't start until the birth of the child and in some cases, not even then. Why not just say that?
This guy is just unbelievable! His audacity is amazing. I really hope the American people are paying close attention to this wanna-be and that they say NO in November.
The comment has been grossly taken out of context. It is quite obvious that his remarks are referring to the scientific element of the question which he admits he is not qualified to answer. Granted, stating that "it is above my pay grade" is not the best way to position past the question, but he is a politician, as far as I am concerned the question that sparked the comment was irrelevant to ask him as he is not a scientist.
