CitizenLink Petitions for Defense of DOMA Over Obama's Refusal

CitizenLink Petitions email dated 03.03.11:
In the week since President Obama and his Justice Department announced they would no longer defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) against the five lawsuits currently pending against it, thousands of pro-family Americans have signed our “Defend DOMA” petition. Will you join with CitizenLink by lending your voice in support of marriage? Click here to sign the “Defend DOMA” petition.

Specifically, we need to continue urging Congress to “intervene” in the legal defense of DOMA, which defines marriage for all federal purposes as the union of a man and a woman, and protects states from being forced to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

In this week’s CitizenLink Report, I talked with Federal Policy Analyst Ashley Horne and Judicial Analyst Bruce Hausknecht about the consequences of not defending DOMA and what we can do to make our voices heard. Click here to watch.

While Republicans in the House still haven’t offered a firm solution, Speaker John Boehner said this week that the House is considering “all its options” in how to defend DOMA. House leadership is expected to make a decision by the end of the week. This is good news, indeed.

I’m even more encouraged by Rep. Jim Jordan’s statement that House conservatives would continue to work with House leadership to do everything within their power to defend marriage. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know what the House intends to do.

With deadlines looming in pending federal cases against DOMA, the House must act quickly. I urge you to ask your lawmakers to move quickly to intervene to defend DOMA. The greater the cry from the public, the faster Congress may move.

Please take action this week to protect marriage by signing our petition and then forward this e-mail to your pro-marriage family and friends so they, too, can sign our petition to defend marriage. You can also go to our Action Center to send an e-mail directly to your lawmakers.

Thanks in advance for continuing to stand with CitizenLink in support of marriage!

For faith and family,

Tom Minnery
Senior Vice President
Government and Public Policy
